MAS students reach Teen Tech Awards Finals

In September 2016, a group of Year 9 and 10 students began work for the Teen Tech competition.  Founded in 2008 by Maggie Philbin and Chris Dodson, TeenTech run lively initiatives with a supporting award scheme to help the “X Factor” generation understand their true potential and the real opportunities available in the contemporary STEM workplace. Students were asked to invent and design a product for a problem they felt needed solving, based on ‘making life easier, simpler or better’.  The entries were completed onsite in a TeenTech after-school club and entered on line at the end of May 2017.

During the project, students faced some tough challenges with the teams brainstorming and debating their initial concepts  and then working exceptionally hard see their concepts through product design, eventually creating a working prototype.  They had to use a range of skills excelling at creativity, critical thinking, team work and their ability to present their ideas.

The students, representing the Environment, Future of Food and Manufacturing categories, were thrilled to learn that they had reached the national TeenTech Awards final taking place on Monday 26th June.  A full list of students and their projects can be found below.  There will be a prize of £1000 to the winning school in each category and the teams will then discover where they have been placed.  Overall winners will be presented with their awards by HRH Duke of York KG at Buckingham Palace.

Reaching the finals is a remarkable achievement and huge congratulations to all the students who took part.

TEAM 1

Category:    Environment
Project:       Sensorship – Based on monitoring fishing vessels to prevent illegal or over fishing

TEAM 2

Category:    Future of Food
Project:       Snowdrop Chewing Gum – Based on a dissoluble chewing gum
Students:    Musammoth Siddiqa Khatun Anjuma (Year 10), Aarifa Islam (Year 10), Faria  Hoque (Year 10)

TEAM 3

Category:    Manufacturing
Project:       Holograms – Based on integrating Holograms into everyday life (judged across all categories)
Students:    Jawad Bakar (Year 9),  Junaid Mohamed (Year 9), Abdul Muhaimin  Tahseen (Year 9), Ahmed  Muhtadi (Year 7) NB: Ahmed assisted the project, but is not an official team member
