Personal Development

Through Mulberry Academy Shoreditch Sixth Form, or the MAS6 Diploma, students will develop the skills necessary to be successful, growing their character to be responsible, resilient, and ready to learn in a way that empowers students to become independent students, critical in their thinking, informed in their choices and confident in their ability to succeed in the modern world. The MAS6 Diploma will provide the framework through which form tutors can guide, steer and define the student’s provision, overseen by the Head of Sixth Form, Deputy Head of Sixth Form and Head of Year. Each student’s MAS6 Diploma will be bespoke and relative to their strengths, areas for development and targets.

The MAS6 Diploma is based on three key areas:

CAREERS

Sixth Form is a critical time when students are making decisions about their future paths, whether it be entering the workforce, pursuing higher education, or exploring vocational training. Careers education helps students explore various career options, understand their interests and strengths, and make informed decisions about their next steps. Careers education emphasises the development of employability skills, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management. These skills are not only valuable for future careers but also for success in higher education and everyday life. Careers education provides insights into evolving industries, emerging job opportunities, and the skills that are in demand, helping students align their educational choices with market needs.

CHARACTER

Character education helps students develop a strong ethical foundation. It encourages them to consider ethical implications in decision-making, fostering a sense of responsibility and integrity that is essential in both academic and real-world contexts. Sixth Form students are on the cusp of adulthood and becoming active members of society. Character development instils a sense of civic responsibility, encouraging students to engage in community service, contribute positively to society, and be aware of their role in creating a better world. Character education encourages a love for learning and a curious mindset. It instils the value of continuous personal and intellectual growth, fostering a lifelong commitment to education and self-improvement.

EXPERIENCES

Experiences allow students to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to real-world situations. This practical application enhances understanding and reinforces the relevance of academic concepts. Through various experiences, students build networks, connect with peers, teachers, and professionals, and enhance their social skills. These connections can be valuable for future academic pursuits and career opportunities. Sixth Form experiences, including academic challenges, research projects, and extracurricular activities, prepare students for the rigors of higher education. They develop the skills and habits necessary for success at the university level.

The Global Citizenship Programme

The Global Citizenship Programme aims to cultivate a sense of global awareness, responsibility, and engagement among individuals. The Global Citizenship Programme is designed to prepare students to be informed and active global citizens who understand and address global issues and challenges, environmental sustainability, and digital literacy.

The Enrichment Programme

The Enrichment Programme is designed to enhance and enrich the overall educational experience, providing students with opportunities for personal growth, skill development, and exploration of diverse interests. The Enrichment Programme includes a variety of extra-curricular activities such as clubs, sports, and arts.

The Student Leadership Team

The Student Leadership Team considers student leadership roles within Mulberry Academy Shoreditch. These teams play a crucial role in fostering a positive and inclusive school culture, representing the student body, and contributing to various aspects of school life. For example:

• Student council

• Peer mentoring scheme

• Academic leadership

• Ambassadors

The Community Engagement Programme

The Community Engagement Programme encourages students and teachers to actively participate in activities that benefit the local community. The Community Engagement Programme aims to foster a sense of social responsibility, develop civic-minded individuals, and strengthen the school’s connection with its surrounding community.

Super-Curricular and Experiences

‘Super-curricular’ refers to activities and experiences that go beyond the standard curriculum, providing students with additional opportunities to deepen their knowledge and skills in a particular subject or area of interest. For example:

• Independent research projects (EPQ)

• Participation in competitions

• Internships

• Attending conferences, seminars, and lectures

• MOOCs

Careers and Work Experience

Careers and Work Experience in Sixth Form plays a crucial role in preparing students for the transition from education to the workforce. The aim is to provide students with practical insights into various professions, help them explore potential career paths, and develop the skills necessary for success in the workplace.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Beyond the core curriculum, enrichment provides students with opportunities to explore diverse interests, fostering a sense of curiosity and passion for learning. These activities, which can range from participating in clubs and competitions to engaging in community service and internships, not only enhance academic knowledge but also cultivate crucial life skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.

Enrichment experiences expose individuals to a broader worldview, encouraging them to think critically and adapt to new situations. Moreover, they play a vital role in developing well-rounded and socially aware individuals, nurturing qualities like empathy, cultural awareness, and a sense of civic responsibility. Enrichment activities contribute not only to personal development but also to building a vibrant and dynamic educational community. By embracing a variety of enrichment opportunities, individuals are better equipped to navigate the complexities of the modern world, pursue their passions, and become active contributors to society.

Scholarships

The availability of scholarship awards, ranging from £250 to £500, represents a valuable investment in students’ personal development. These financial incentives not only acknowledge academic accomplishments but also underscore the importance of holistic growth. The £500 scholarship, as the higher award, may signify outstanding achievements, leadership, and a demonstrated commitment to personal and academic excellence. Meanwhile, the £250 scholarship recognises commendable efforts in personal development, encouraging recipients to continue their journey of self-discovery and improvement.

These scholarships provide not only financial support but also serve as a powerful endorsement of our Sixth Form’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals. Whether the focus is on leadership, community service, or extracurricular engagement, these awards inspire students to explore and develop their unique talents and qualities. By fostering personal development, these scholarships contribute to the overall educational experience, creating a culture where students are not only academically accomplished but also equipped with the skills, values, and experiences that will shape them into successful and well-rounded individuals in their future endeavours.
