On Monday 23rd April, the academy was privileged to accompany three deserving students on a trip to the House of Commons.  The trip was a reward arranged by Lloyds Community Programme to celebrate the students’ accomplishments in the semi-final of the Lloyds annual public speaking competition.  Highlights included learning the history of the House of Commons as we stood along its green leather pews and the opportunity to meet Jim Fitzpatrick, local Labour MP of Poplar and Limehouse.  He commended all the students on their achievement in the competition, championing the skill of public speaking and reiterating its importance in daily life. The students asked engaging and challenging questions, including quizzing Mr Fitzpatrick on the housing crisis and the status of Brexit!  The day was rounded off with a tour of the Jewel Tour, an English heritage site built to house Edward III’s treasures.  It was a great day and an example of the fantastic and unique opportunities available to students at MAS involved in extra-curricular workshops.

“The trip was really educational and the tour of the Houses of Parliament gave me a real insight into the scale of the Palace of Westminster – the architecture is remarkable.”

“Mr Fitzpatrick was an inspiring man who values hard work and integrity. It was very interesting to learn how his commitment and dedication to his previous career in the fire service and then politics has led him to success without a university degree.”
