Mulberry Academy Shoreditch students build their sense of community

On Wednesday 10th June, MAS Student Leaders took to the streets of the local area on a Community Walk, as part of their #iwill pledge to help make the community a better place to be. Held in conjunction with civic organising charity Citizens UK, the project provided an ideal opportunity for the students to develop their sense of social responsibility and to learn more about their role in the community.

During the walk, the students visited Pollard Square, Wilmot Street, Temple Street and a variety of surrounding parks and green spaces. Their task was to survey the area and make a note of any poorly maintained parks, unsafe road crossings and instances of chronic littering.

As follow-up to the walk, the students will now present their findings to staff at the academy, using their initiative to offer creative solutions to the problems. Once approved, they will then have the opportunity to write personal letters addressed to the relevant authorities, in a bid to effect the required changes.

The Community Walk proved to be a hugely successful occasion for the Student Leaders, all of whom demonstrated a high level of awareness and commitment to their community throughout. We look forward to seeing their efforts having a positive impact on life in the local area!
