Students at Mulberry Academy Shoreditch continue to be busy on the school farm this term, following the Growing Schools Marketplace event at City Hall on 9 July 2015.

The event was organised in partnership with Food Growing Schools: London, and provided an opportunity for schools to showcase the food they had grown. In previous years, the event has been well-attended, with high-profile guests such as Ireland’s Prime Minister, Enda Kenny.

The marketplace was the offsite showcase event in a series of four farmers’ markets the academy participated in this year, and reflected the Food Growing Schools: London summer theme of ‘Grow Your Own Picnic’. The stall was run by Mariyah Islam from year 7, and Andrea Redhead Strickland, Aida Tewolde and Emily De Lorenzi from year 8. Produce on offer included elderflower cordial, a selection of delicious jams, and vegetables such as tomatoes, potatoes and peppers.

The event was highly successful and the stall was kept busy with customers, including the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson. The girls made the most of the photo opportunity, and many attendees took to Twitter, celebrating the event and posting pictures of Boris and the students.

Through events like these, the school farm has provided excellent opportunities for students to enrich their learning and development beyond the classroom. Students have been provided with the opportunity to learn about rural life and healthy eating through a number of trips to working farms in the area.

Taking part in these activities has taught students economical skills, such as pricing the produce and counting the money, as well as practical skills and work ethic. Through all of their hard work, the academy is close to achieving the bronze Food for Life award, and the marketplace event will be a key component in this.

Overall, it has been a highly successful year on the farm, and students are set to be just as busy in the new term.
