On Monday 6th to Friday 10th November 2017 MAS students and staff held a series of events to commemorate a week of national remembrance.

The week kicked off with form time activities, involving themes of remembrance, diversity in war, women in war and disability. Students used the topics to engage in stimulating discussions.

On Tuesday 7th November, four Year 12 History students embarked on a day trip to Auschwitz, Poland, to visit to the Auschwitz concentration camp and the Auschwitz-Birkenhau death camp. The students were taken on a guided tour of the complex and learnt about some of the atrocities committed there in more detail. At the end of the day students were invited to join a Remembrance ceremony conducted by a Rabbi and lit candles to bring light into such a dark place. On their return to the academy, the students led an assembly on Thursday and Friday for different year groups to give an insight into their experiences and feelings following the trip.

During break and lunch times, students wrote reflective messages on a poppy picture and pinned it to a display board to form a ‘wreath of remembrance’ which was read by other students and staff.

All week poppies were on sale and students were encouraged to donate money and to wear their poppies with pride.

The week ended with students, staff and visitors taking part in a one minute silence on Friday 10th November 2017.
