MAS joins Mulberry students at the Mulberry Annual Education Lecture

On Monday 5th February, Sixth Form students took part in a trip to the Mulberry Annual Education Lecture at the Royal Festival of Arts. The speaker at this year’s event was Marin Alsop, an inspiring visionary who is a firm believer that ‘music can change lives’. She is recognised internationally for her commitment to education, and to bringing music to wider audiences. Ms Alsop attended the Julliard Institute and Yale University before founding the organisation ‘OrchKids’, bringing high quality music education to the most deprived young people in the city of Baltimore.

Ms Alsop, was truly amazing. The students found the lecture inspiring and engaging, particularly the Question & Answer session. Hafsana Khan and Abdi Karim were very bold and asked a question each. Iqra was particularly impressive – she had carried out research on the speaker before the event, so was armed with a bank of knowledge and understanding of Ms Alsop’s work before setting foot in the venue! Students also networked and met other students from both Mulberry School for Girls and Mulberry UTC, as well as adults including David Gracie, Vice Chair of the academy’s Trust Board. Students set themselves the challenge of speaking to at least 2 new people and they ended up speaking to many more. They were polite and respectful, thanking Dr. Vanessa Ogden as we left the venue.

MAS staff commented that it was a pleasure escorting our students to such a prestigious event and an historic London venue.
