MAS students win TeenTech Awards and a visit to Buckingham Palace

On Monday 26th June 2017, three teams from Mulberry Academy Shoreditch took part in the national TeenTech final, beating 2,000 teens to compete against the last 63 projects and 143 TeenTech finalists.  Our students set up their booths and spent four gruelling hours pitching their ideas, and answering very tough questions from industry experts and celebrity judges.Just a few weeks after learning that they had made it to the finals, two projects were announced as winners in their categories. Winning project ‘Sensorship’ was based on monitoring fishing vessels and the group won the top prize of £1,000.  Joint winners in their category was ‘Snowdrop Chewing Gum’, which was based on dissoluble chewing gum.  Our third project ‘Holograms’ didn’t win, but represented themselves and the school fantastically.  Full category, project and student names are below.

The Judges on the panel were specialists in the STEM sector and included:

  • Maggie Philbin OBE – CEO, TeenTech
  • Kate Russell – BBC Click
  • Katherine Bennett OBE – Senior Vice President, Airbus
  • Andrew Cohen – Head of BBC Studios Science Unit
  • Dr Sue Black OBE – a technology, digital skills expert, social entrepreneur, consultant and international keynote speaker

The students displayed amazing professionalism and confidence throughout the day with many industry professionals remarking how “brilliant” and “incredible” our students were.  An award ceremony was held at the end of the day and the winning teams will make a visit to Buckingham Palace to meet HRH Duke of York KG and receive their prize fund in the autumn term.

This is an exceptional achievement for our students and we are very proud of them.
