Community Iftar 2022

In 2022, after a two year Covid-imposed break, Mulberry Academy Shoreditch was once again honoured to be asked to host the Prince’s Trust Annual Mosaic Iftar.

Mosaic was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales to connect young Muslims to relatable role models to help increase their confidence and improve their chances of fulfilling their potential. Many of our own students over the years have been fortunate enough to work with Mosaic mentors who have helped them shape their aspirations and meet their goals.

This year, we welcomed a number of prestigious guests (including the Jordanian ambassador) and volunteer Mosaic mentors to break their fast together with Mulberry staff and students. Our own Head Girl and Head Boy, Amal and Yusef, opened the event with a few words about what this community event means to them.

The theme of the event was ‘Bonds and Bridges’ and included a panel discussion led by Thuto Mali, chair of the Prince’s Trust Gender Equality Network, talking to:

  • Farhana Ibrahim, Prince’s Trust Young Person and Founder of Binta’s Kitchen
  • Akeela Amed MBE, Equalities Campaigner and Chair of Independent Members of the cross-government working group on Anti-Muslim Hatred
  • Shabir Randeree CBE, Chairman of Mosaic and of the Prince’s Trust International (PTI) Board
  • Aurica Fabian, Mulberry Academy Shoreditch Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator and Staff Governor

The panel discussed topics including the role of education in building stronger bonds between communities and what we can learn from the younger generation in this regard.

Our own Mr Ali led the call to prayer and, after prayers, guests enjoyed a feast befitting the occasion prepared by the wonderful Accent Catering.

The event was a wonderful reflection of different parties working towards the common goals of community cohesion and helping young people to fulfil their potential.
