On Wednesday 13th July, we saw our new Year 12s kick off their first lecture with their own version of Question Time, with Former General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Sir Brendan Barber.

At a time when media and political commentators lament the apathy of the Generation Z, 55 of our passionate, articulate and informed Sixth Form students challenged Sir Brendan for over 2 hours about the future of the UK following the referendum where 51.9% of the voting population voted to leave the European Union.

Sir Brendan has held counsel with every Prime Minister from Margaret Thatcher through to David Cameron, so was well equipped to tackle questions posed by our students such as; ‘Can we have another vote?’, ‘What will happen to Corbyn?’ and ‘What is there to gain from being separate from the EU?’, Sir Brendan responded with informed and honest answers and on occasion questioned the Sixth Formers himself.

The students and Sir Brendan were so engaged with the debate that eventually after running an hour over time, he had to be peeled away to attend his other commitments.

Our students left the session with a deeper sense of clarity surrounding the current situation than when they first arrived, Hidayah Dayah commented, “Sir Brendan cleared up lots of questions and queries in my head”.
